How Do You Know if You Are Irrelevant?

Last week I attended a webinar on leveraging AI, and in 90 minutes, the guy shared so many different platforms that could do so many things, it made my head spin.

It’s amazing how I can go from feeling like I’m ahead of most people on the AI curve – or at least solidly moving with the curve – to feeling like I’m already light years behind it, all in a matter of minutes.

Everything changes so FAST.

That’s the rub: Maybe you ARE ahead of most people in something, but then all of a sudden you’re in a context or community where you’re comparing yourself to the rest of the 1%, who are all ahead of the same curve… way ahead.

And in comparison to them, you feel downright average (at best).

Competition can be a vicious reality check.

Especially in today’s job marketplace – one in which there’s so much tough competition, it’s like you have to be a rocket scientist and philanthropist and award-winning chef and supermodel (just to add insult to injury) just to get noticed.

Which also means there’s zero tolerance for slip-ups.

But hidden “banana peels” are everywhere. The smallest errors of omission or commission can make you go from being an ideal candidate to being summarily dismissed.

In today’s competitive market, as Marshall Goldsmith famously said, “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.”

In other words, the résumés you once wrote and the stories that helped you stand out in past interviews may now be exactly what make you seem outdated.

But how can you avoid such missteps?

This Thursday at 2 p.m., join me for a LinkedIn Live event, “Are You Irrelevant?” with résumé expert Robynn Storey, where we’ll dive into the Top 10 Pitfalls to Avoid When Seeking Your Next Executive Role.

Robynn and I will cover 10 ways to ensure that your experience makes you shine as the leader of tomorrow rather than a relic of yesterday. Register to join live so you can ask questions and get access to the replay.

In the spirit of telling stories and writing new chapters, I recently had the pleasure of joining Kristen Lettini on her Build Your Own Fairytale podcast, where I shared my journey from college professor to leadership communication and influence coach.

This episode is packed with strategies and heart-to-heart talks to have with yourself, including:

  • Personal branding
  • Crafting a powerful elevator pitch
  • Knowing when to outsource key tasks and responsibilities as a first-time entrepreneur
  • Overcoming self-imposed limitations
  • And more.

Speaking of new chapters, I’m thrilled to share that I’m stepping into one myself—this time in podcasting!

Starting December 11th, I’ll be co-hosting a new podcast, Alpha Whisperers: GENESIS, with visionary Janet C. Salazar, Chairman for the Foundation for the Support of the United Nations and creator of the Alpha Whisperers brand.

ALPHA WHISPERERS™ seeks to reframe how power and influence operate in society, aiming to increase transparency and accountability not just for top leaders (a.k.a. “Alphas”) in business and government, but for those who advise them— the “Whisperers,” who we call “the quiet power behind the power.”

Our first six-part mini-series will officially launch Wednesday, December 11. Learn more at alphawhisperer.com.

OH! I almost forgot.

I’m also extremely excited to share that my book, Speaking to Influence: Mastering Your Leadership Voiceis about to become a complete online course!

If you’ve ever had thoughts like:

  • “I know I need to be a more compelling speaker and improve my executive presence if I want to get ahead”
  • “I would love to work with Laura directly but I can’t afford private coaching”
  • “I wish there was a course I could join to help make the learning more personal and fun”
  • “A book is great, but I want to go deeper to get all the possible value out of it”

This is for you.

(Or perhaps for a loved one – especially the one for whom you never know what to get for the holidays!)

Stay tuned for this too – the course will be available for presale on Thanksgiving weekend.

It’s time to let your unique skills, talents and expertise shine for all to see!

P.S. Don’t forget that November is National Adoption Month! Here are four ways we can all help kids in foster care feel special and loved as they await a family of their own:

  1. Send an anonymous gift to a child from the Adoption Center’s Winter Wishes Amazon Wishlist.
  2. Donate to the Winter Wishes Campaign via Givebutter.
  3. Visit adopt.org to explore additional ways to support, from volunteering to fostering and adoption.
  4. Share this message or links with your network. You never know who might say, “This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!”
