A pet peeve of mine is that there are far too many things marked “urgent” in life, (especially email,) whether labeled “priority,” “critical” or “ASAP,” or – in the case of my Google Tasks app – asking me to rank each item with one, two or three exclamation points. Oy.
Steven Covey and Jim Collins are both credited with noting that if you have too many priorities, then you really don’t have any.
It becomes very easy to disregard all the cries of urgency, dismissing them as drama to be avoided, especially if any or all of them will require some degree of confrontation.
After all, your calendar is full of fires to put out, and it’s not like any of them are truly matters of life or death.
But what if it IS a matter of life or death, literally?
This week on the Speaking to Influence podcast, Dr. Robert Cavagnol, President of St. Luke's Clinic, tells the story of how he had to handle – very directly but sensitively – a situation that was suddenly treading in those very waters.
Funny thing about hospitals… the doctors and other medical staff aren’t immune from illness, aging, and other factors that can significantly affect their abilities to care for patients.
When behaviors and other signs started to indicate that a medical practitioner might not be able to safely provide medical service to patients, Rob knew he had to act quickly and carefully.
Tune in to hear the words he used to frame the initial intervention directly and empathetically, understanding that multiple massive issues were at stake:
- The physician’s career
- Patients’ lives
- The hospital’s image/reputation and insurance
- His own career, and more.
