Sometimes lessons whisper. Other times, they smack you in the face.
Thankfully, today was the latter.
I’m on vacation this week, down at the Jersey Shore with extended family, as we’ve done for the last three generations. It’s our annual reunion with cousins from Virginia, Baltimore, North Carolina, and all over New Jersey and Philly. Sun, sand, boardwalk fries—you get the picture.
After a perfect beach day and manning the grill for 30+ hungry relatives (plus maybe one summer cocktail), the crew was heading back out for glow-in-the-dark kite flying and frisbee on the beach.
And what did I hear myself say?
“Have fun! I’ll meet you back at the house—I have to write my newsletter tonight…”
Wait—what?
Yes, I should have written it last week. And yes, I was very prepared for this trip… just not in that way.
Here’s the thing: There’s always one more thing you could do. One more tweak, one more draft, one more step to go from an A to an A+. But is it ever truly necessary?
Sometimes, yes, it is.
But at some point, it is okay — and even necessary — to say: Enough.
✔️ You’ve done enough prep.
✔️ The standard is high enough.
✔️ You’ve rehearsed enough.
✔️ You are ready enough.
In case your inner overachiever needs external permission, allow me to help:
You have my permission to say, with confidence: Enough is enough.
- ️️Enough over-preparing for your presentation—you’ve got this.
- Enough doubting your qualifications—you are more than ready.
- Enough waiting for affirmation—you've already proven yourself (that's why you have a seat at the table).
- Enough deferring personal well-being—it’s time.
And because leadership is about leading by example and walking the talk, here’s my example:
This is the entirety of this week’s blog.
This is it. And it’s enough.
But if you do need help saying “enough” in your career—whether that means figuring out your next big career move like we do in my Quantum Leap program, or making others finally see that you’re ready for more, like we do in executive coaching, drop me a line here and let’s figure out what’s the best next step for you.
Now I’m off to fly a kite with glowing LED tails on the beach.
